The absolute most critical thing to understand before purchasing the DM-E1D is its exclusive camera compatibility. This microphone requires the new 21-pin digital Multi-Function Shoe to operate and transmit audio. It is fully compatible with modern bodies like the EOS R3, R6 Mark II, R7, R8, R10, and R50. It will not work on older cameras with standard 5-pin hot shoes (like the original EOS R, R5, R6, RP, or any DSLR), and there is no adapter that can send its digital audio into an older analog camera. If you have an older camera, you must buy the cable-driven Canon DM-E1 or DM-E100 instead.

Secondly, unlike older microphones that feature physical dials on the back to change the directional pick-up pattern, the DM-E1D is controlled entirely through the camera's touch screen. While the dedicated menu button on the mic makes this fast, you cannot physically flip a switch on the mic itself to change from Shotgun to Stereo mode.

Finally, while the build quality is excellent, the microphone does not feature environmental weather sealing. If you are shooting in heavy rain, you should protect the microphone just as you would an unsealed camera body.
