Canon RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens

The Ultra-Lightweight, Full-Frame Everyday Explorer

If you have just purchased your first full-frame Canon mirrorless camera (like the EOS R8 or EOS RP) and are looking for a highly versatile, walkaround lens that won't weigh you down or break the bank, the Canon RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM is the perfect starting point. Designed to be the ultimate lightweight companion for travel and everyday storytelling, it delivers genuine full-frame optical quality in a package that weighs less than half a pound.

By utilizing a clever retractable barrel design, this lens takes up virtually no space in your camera bag. It covers a highly practical focal range, allowing you to capture sweeping, dramatic landscapes or wide vlogging footage at 24mm, and then smoothly zoom to 50mm for flattering, distortion-free portraits and tighter everyday snapshots.

Why You'll Love This Lens

  • Unprecedented Full-Frame Portability: Weighing a mere 7.4 ounces (210g) and retracting down to just 2.3 inches long for storage, this is one of the smallest and lightest full-frame zoom lenses Canon has ever created. It completely eliminates the neck and shoulder fatigue typically associated with carrying a full-frame camera all day.

  • Crucial Image Stabilization (IS): Budget-friendly, lightweight lenses often skip optical stabilization, making this a massive advantage for hybrid shooters. The lens provides up to 4.5 stops of shake correction on its own, and an impressive 7 stops of coordinated control when paired with an IBIS-equipped camera (like the EOS R6 Mark II). This ensures your handheld walking video is smooth and your low-light photos remain sharp.

  • Smooth and Quiet STM Autofocus: The leadscrew-type STM (Stepping Motor) provides fast, accurate autofocus for still photography while delivering incredibly smooth, near-silent focus transitions during video recording—preventing distracting motor noises from ruining your audio.

  • Customizable Control Ring: To save space, the lens utilizes a dual-purpose focus/control ring. When switched to "Control," you can quickly adjust your aperture, ISO, exposure compensation, or shutter speed simply by turning the ring on the lens barrel.

  • Excellent Optical Clarity: Despite its budget-friendly price point, the lens features two aspherical elements and Canon's Super Spectra Coating to minimize ghosting and flare, ensuring your images retain excellent contrast and color accuracy.

Things to Note

To achieve its incredibly tiny footprint and highly accessible price point, this lens makes a few notable physical compromises.

First, it features a relatively short zoom range. Unlike standard 24-70mm or 24-105mm lenses, this lens tops out at 50mm. While excellent for everyday photography, it lacks the true telephoto reach required for capturing distant sports or wildlife.

Secondly, the lens features a variable, relatively dark maximum aperture (f/4.5 to f/6.3). Because the lens drops to f/6.3 at the 50mm end, it lets in a relatively small amount of light. This makes it primarily a "good weather" lens. In dark indoor environments, you will need to rely heavily on your camera's high-ISO capabilities to keep your shutter speeds fast enough to avoid motion blur.

Third, remember the retractable barrel mechanism. You cannot shoot while the lens is collapsed for storage. Before taking a photo, you must physically rotate the zoom ring to extend the front barrel to the 24mm working position.

Finally, because this is an enthusiast-level consumer lens and not part of Canon's professional "L-series," it features a plastic lens mount and lacks environmental weather sealing. You will need to be cautious and protect your gear when shooting in heavy rain, dust, or blowing sand.
