Fujifilm Fujinon GF 80mm f/1.7 R WR Lens

The Fastest Lens in the Medium Format World

When Fujifilm announced the GF 80mm f/1.7 R WR, it made waves for one massive reason: it is the world's fastest autofocus lens designed for a medium format system. Offering a 63mm equivalent field of view on full-frame terms, it sits right in the "Goldilocks" zone—slightly tighter than a standard 50mm, but wider than a traditional 85mm portrait lens.

This lens is a dream for portrait, wedding, and street photographers who want the absolute maximum amount of light-gathering capability and depth-of-field control from the large-format GFX sensors. Paired with the massive 102-megapixel resolution of cameras like the GFX100 II, the GF 80mm f/1.7 renders images with breathtaking sharpness at the focal plane, melting away into exceptionally smooth, creamy bokeh.

  • Unrivaled f/1.7 Aperture: In the world of digital medium format, getting an aperture this wide with autofocus is incredibly rare. The f/1.7 maximum aperture allows you to obliterate backgrounds into a soft wash of color, isolating your subjects with a 3D-like "pop" that smaller formats struggle to replicate.

  • Low-Light Mastery: That fast aperture isn't just for bokeh. It allows you to keep your ISO low and your shutter speeds high when shooting indoors or at twilight, ensuring you get the cleanest possible files from your GFX sensor.

  • The 63mm Equivalent Sweet Spot: The 63mm full-frame equivalent focal length is incredibly versatile. It's wide enough for environmental portraits or tight street photography, yet long enough to avoid facial distortion during close-up portraiture.

  • Pro-Grade Build (R WR): The "R" denotes the physical aperture ring, allowing for tactile exposure control, complete with a lockable "C" (Command) position. The "WR" signifies extensive weather resistance, with seals protecting against dust, moisture, and temperatures down to 14°F (-10°C).

  • Stunning Optical Formula: The lens uses 12 elements in 9 groups, including one aspherical element and two Super ED elements. This controls spherical aberration and color fringing, resulting in biting sharpness even when shot wide open.

Things to Note

The most important thing to know before buying the GF 80mm f/1.7 is its autofocus performance. Unlike some newer Fuji lenses that use blazing-fast Linear Motors (LM), this lens relies on a powerful DC motor to move its massive glass elements. Because of this, the autofocus is not completely silent and can feel a bit sluggish compared to the GF 110mm f/2 or GF 45-100mm f/4. It is perfectly fine for portraiture and deliberate shooting, but it is not ideal for tracking fast-moving sports or keeping a perfectly silent profile during video recording.

Additionally, while it is surprisingly compact for an f/1.7 medium format lens, it is still a hefty piece of glass. At nearly 1.8 pounds, it requires a secure grip and pairs best with the deeper grips found on the GFX100S II or GFX100 II bodies.
