Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 (SE) Lens

Classic Heritage Meets Modern Mirrorless Performance

Designed specifically to complement the vintage aesthetics of Nikon's Z fc and Z f mirrorless cameras, the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 (SE) is a special edition of Nikon's incredibly popular "muffin" lens. The "(SE)" stands for Special Edition, meaning it features a stunning retro design inspired by classic manual-focus NIKKOR lenses from the era of the legendary Nikon FM2 film camera. It features a knurled control ring and classic typography that looks and feels right at home on a retro-styled body.

Beneath the vintage exterior, however, is a thoroughly modern optical design. Falling perfectly between a slightly wide 35mm and a standard 50mm, the 40mm focal length is incredibly versatile, mimicking the natural field of view of the human eye. Whether you are shooting street photography, casual portraits, or everyday lifestyle moments, this unassuming little lens delivers excellent sharpness and beautifully soft background blur (bokeh) in an incredibly lightweight package.

Why You'll Love This Lens

  • Timeless Retro Design: The classic knurled texture of the control ring isn't just for looks—it provides excellent tactile feedback that manual focus shooters will appreciate. Paired with a silver-and-black Z fc or the full-frame Z f, it creates a gorgeous, cohesive setup that begs to be taken out and shot.

  • The "Goldilocks" Focal Length: 40mm is uniquely versatile. It’s wide enough to capture environmental context in street scenes or tight indoor spaces, yet long enough to shoot flattering portraits without the facial distortion common in wider lenses. On a crop-sensor (DX) camera like the Z fc, it acts as a perfect 60mm equivalent portrait lens.

  • Featherweight Build: Weighing a mere 6 ounces (170g) and measuring less than 2 inches long, it completely transforms the footprint of your camera. It creates a stealthy, highly portable setup that you won't hesitate to throw in a small bag for everyday carry.

  • Fast f/2 Aperture: The bright f/2 maximum aperture allows you to easily shoot indoors or at dusk without cranking your ISO to noisy levels. It also creates excellent subject separation, melting busy backgrounds into smooth, creamy blur thanks to its 9 rounded diaphragm blades.

  • Quiet, Fast Autofocus: Driven by a stepping motor (STM), the autofocus is snappy for stills and virtually silent for video. This makes it an excellent choice for vloggers or run-and-gun filmmakers who rely on in-camera audio.

  • Customizable Control Ring: The retro-styled focus ring can be customized in the camera's menu to control aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation, giving you a tactile, clickless way to adjust settings on the fly.

Things to Note

Optically, the 40mm f/2 (SE) is 100% identical to the standard NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2. You are paying a slight premium for the retro exterior styling. If you do not care about matching the vintage aesthetic of a Z f or Z fc camera, you can save a little money by purchasing the standard version.

To achieve this incredibly lightweight design, Nikon used a plastic lens mount rather than the metal mount found on their more expensive S-Line lenses. While modern high-density plastics are incredibly durable, it won't feel quite as premium when mounting it to your camera. Additionally, while it has a rubber gasket at the mount to help keep out dust, it is not fully weather-sealed throughout the barrel, and it does not come with a lens hood included in the box.
