The Groundbreaking f/2 Telephoto Zoom for Unmatched Versatility

For portrait, wedding, and event photographers, deciding between the convenience of a zoom and the low-light performance of a fast prime has always been a painful compromise. The Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM completely shatters that dilemma. By pushing the boundaries of optical engineering, Sony has created the world's first telephoto zoom lens to reach 150mm with an incredibly bright, constant f/2 maximum aperture.

By heavily leaning into the advanced technology of the G Master series, this lens effectively replaces a bag full of premium prime lenses. It delivers the stunning, three-dimensional subject isolation and corner-to-corner sharpness you expect from a dedicated 85mm or 135mm prime, but with the split-second versatility of an internally zooming barrel. Whether you are shooting in a dimly lit wedding chapel or capturing fast-paced indoor sports, this lens delivers absolute optical perfection.

Why You'll Love This Lens

  • The Groundbreaking f/2 Aperture: Being a full stop brighter than a traditional 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom, this lens lets in twice as much light. This allows you to shoot in dark reception halls with drastically lower ISOs, and it melts distracting backgrounds away into a gorgeous, creamy wash of color (bokeh).

  • Replaces Your Primes: The 50-150mm focal range covers the absolute most critical portrait focal lengths (50mm, 85mm, 100mm, and 135mm) in a single lens. You never have to miss a fleeting moment to swap glass on your camera body again.

  • Flawless Internal Zoom: Just like Sony's beloved 200-600mm, the physical length of this lens never changes as you zoom. This keeps the center of gravity completely static, offering unprecedented balance when flying the camera on a motorized video gimbal, and making it surprisingly comfortable to shoot handheld without the lens extending outward.

  • Blistering Quad XD Autofocus: Driving the massive glass elements of an f/2 telephoto lens is a monumental task, but this lens utilizes four precision XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motors. The autofocus is highly accurate, completely whisper-quiet, and easily keeps up with the 120 fps continuous burst speeds of the flagship Sony a9 III.

  • Exquisite Portrait Bokeh: Packed with two precision XA (extreme aspherical) elements and a newly designed 11-blade circular aperture, the background blur is unusually smooth and creamy for a zoom lens, strictly suppressing distracting "onion ring" textures.

  • Dedicated Manual Iris Ring: A massive benefit for hybrid shooters and videographers, this lens features a tactile physical aperture (iris) ring directly on the barrel. It includes a physical de-click switch that allows filmmakers to pull exposure smoothly and silently while rolling video.

Things to Note

To achieve this unprecedented f/2 aperture across a telephoto zoom range, the lens is physically long and relatively heavy. Weighing nearly 3 pounds and measuring almost 8 inches in length 100% of the time (due to the internal zoom), it requires a dedicated, deep camera bag and requires some physical stamina for all-day use.

Secondly, because the front element is massive, it requires huge 95mm screw-on front filters. If you plan to use circular polarizers or variable ND filters for video work, be prepared to invest in these larger, more expensive filter sizes (though the included lens hood thankfully features a sliding window to easily adjust rotating filters without taking the hood off).

Third, unlike traditional f/2.8 telephoto zooms, this lens does not feature built-in Optical SteadyShot (OSS), nor does its optical formula support the use of Sony's 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverters. You will need to rely entirely on your camera body's In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) to keep handheld shots crisp.

Finally, as a first-of-its-kind optical breakthrough wearing the premium G Master badge, it carries a top-tier professional price tag (retailing around $3,998). It is a serious, highly specialized investment designed for working professionals who demand uncompromising speed, low-light performance, and versatility.
