Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo Lens
The Undisputed Legend of Extreme Close-Up Photography
For dedicated macro photographers, scientists, and extreme close-up enthusiasts, the Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro is a legendary, one-of-a-kind optical marvel. While most professional macro lenses top out at a 1.0x (life-size) magnification ratio, the MP-E 65mm starts at 1x and pushes all the way to a staggering 5x magnification. This allows you to fill a full-frame sensor with a subject as tiny as a grain of rice, uncovering hidden worlds of intricate detail without the need for clunky extension tubes or bellows.
Because this lens is dedicated solely to extreme magnification, Canon engineered a highly specialized floating elements system equipped with an Ultra-Low Dispersion (UD) glass element. This ensures that even when you are pushed in to 5x magnification, your images remain staggeringly sharp with exceptional color accuracy and practically zero chromatic aberration. Built with a rugged metal barrel and a dedicated tripod collar, this is a highly specialized, precision tool for those who demand the absolute peak of close-up capability.
Why You'll Love This Lens
-
Unprecedented 1x to 5x Magnification: This is the defining feature of the lens. It allows you to seamlessly transition from capturing a life-size image of a coin (1x) to capturing the microscopic facets of an insect's eye (5x) natively, completely revolutionizing your macro capabilities.
-
Flawless Optical Quality: Designed exclusively for high-magnification work, the optical formula utilizes a UD glass element to control color fringing. Even at paper-thin depths of field, the contrast and clarity are exceptional.
-
Precise Manual Control: At these extreme magnifications, autofocus is useless. The lens features a wide, deeply textured manual focus ring that allows for the microscopic, pinpoint focus adjustments required for focus stacking.
-
Removable Tripod Collar: Because the depth of field at 5x magnification is measured in fractions of a millimeter, absolute stability is mandatory. The included tripod collar allows you to securely mount the lens (rather than the camera body) directly to a macro focusing rail or tripod for perfectly balanced, vibration-free shooting.
-
Macro Flash Ready: The front ring of the lens is explicitly designed to accept Canon's specialized macro lighting tools, allowing for the direct mounting of an optional Macro Ring Lite (like the MR-14EX II) or Macro Twin Lite (MT-26EX-RT) to properly illuminate your tiny subjects.

Things to Note
First and foremost, you must understand the highly specialized nature of this lens: it is strictly manual focus, and it does NOT focus to infinity. You cannot use this lens for standard portraits or everyday photography. It is engineered exclusively for extreme close-up macro work starting at 1.0x magnification.
Secondly, you must be aware of the "effective aperture" loss at high magnifications. As you extend the lens barrel out toward 5x magnification, the viewfinder will become exceedingly dark. Because you will be working mere inches from your subject, utilizing a dedicated macro flash (like a Ring Lite or Twin Lite) is practically mandatory to achieve proper exposure and freeze any micro-vibrations.
Because this is a classic EF Mount lens from the DSLR era, modern mirrorless shooters using the Canon EOS R system will absolutely need to purchase the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R to attach this lens to their cameras. (Note: The built-in focus peaking on modern mirrorless cameras makes using this manual-focus lens significantly easier than on older DSLRs!).
Finally, please note that Canon has officially discontinued production of the MP-E 65mm. Because there is still no direct replacement for it in the modern RF lineup, it remains a highly sought-after, legendary piece of glass on the used market.
