Tamron 12-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Lens (Nikon Z Mount)
The Ultra-Wide Storyteller
The Tamron 12-20mm f/2.8 is a revolutionary ultra wide-angle zoom lens designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras, bringing an entirely new perspective to the Nikon Z mount. Launching in August 2026, this lens offers an incredibly expansive 12mm focal length, allowing creators to capture the true vastness of landscapes, dramatic architectural interiors, and sweeping astrophotography scenes.
Despite its extreme wide-angle capabilities and bright f/2.8 constant aperture, Tamron has managed to engineer this lens into an astoundingly compact and lightweight form factor. It is designed to be the ultimate companion for travel and night sky photography, delivering edge-to-edge sharpness in a package that won't weigh you down.
Why You'll Love This Lens
-
12mm Ultra-Wide Perspective: The 12mm wide end provides a massive 121° angle of view. This overwhelming breadth allows you to capture dynamic, sweeping compositions that feel truly immersive, making it an incredible tool for capturing grand landscapes or tight, dramatic interior spaces.
-
Constant f/2.8 Aperture: The bright f/2.8 maximum aperture is maintained throughout the entire zoom range. This is essential for low-light shooting and makes this lens a "new protagonist" for astrophotography, allowing you to capture clean, detailed night skies without resorting to excessively high ISOs.
-
Unbelievably Compact Form: Ultra-wide, fast-aperture lenses are notoriously large and front-heavy. Tamron defied expectations by engineering this lens to weigh just 20.7 oz (585g) and measure a mere 4.8 inches (121.3mm) for the Nikon Z mount. It achieves a sophisticated balance, providing professional-grade performance in a highly mobile package.
-
Astrophotography-Optimized Optics: The optical design incorporates advanced elements like XGM (eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical) and GM elements. These effectively suppress peripheral blurring and, crucially for night skies, correct sagittal coma flare to ensure stars render as sharp pinpoints from the center to the extreme edges.
-
VXD Autofocus System: Driven by Tamron's high-speed, high-precision Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive (VXD) linear motor, the autofocus is fast and remarkably quiet, making it well-suited for both stills and video applications.
-
Stunning Close-Up Performance: With a Minimum Object Distance (MOD) of just 7.1 inches (0.18m) at the 12mm wide end, you can achieve incredibly dynamic close-up shots with sweeping, exaggerated backgrounds.

Things to Note
Because of the extreme 12mm focal length and the required optical design to maintain f/2.8 edge-to-edge, the front element of this lens is likely bulbous. This means it does not accept traditional screw-on front filters. Instead, Tamron has included an integrated rear filter holder, meaning you will need to use specific rear-mount gel or glass filters if you wish to use NDs for long exposures.
Additionally, the lens hood is integrated and non-removable, serving to protect the protruding front element and reduce flare. Finally, while it is surprisingly lightweight for its class, it is still a substantial piece of glass compared to slower f/4 ultra-wide zooms; balancing it on smaller bodies or lightweight gimbals may require some adjustment.
