To achieve its incredibly small size and accessible price point, the RF-S 18-45mm makes several compromises. First, the lens features a relatively short 2.5x zoom range. It is excellent for everyday snapshots and vlogging, but it lacks the telephoto reach needed to capture distant wildlife or field sports (for that, you will want the RF-S 55-210mm or RF-S 18-150mm).

Secondly, the lens features a variable, relatively dark maximum aperture (f/4.5 to f/6.3). Because the lens drops to f/6.3 at the 45mm telephoto end, it lets in a relatively small amount of light. This means it will struggle in very dark indoor environments (forcing the camera to raise its ISO), and it will not produce the extreme, creamy background blur (bokeh) of a dedicated portrait prime lens like a 50mm f/1.8.

Third, remember the retractable barrel mechanism. You cannot shoot while the lens is collapsed for storage. Before taking a photo or recording a video, you must physically rotate the zoom ring to extend the front barrel past the 18mm mark.

Finally, to keep the weight down to a mere 4.6 ounces, the lens utilizes a plastic lens mount rather than metal. Furthermore, like almost all non-L Canon lenses, the EW-53 lens hood is sold separately.
