Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM Lens

The Ultra-Lightweight APS-C Telephoto Companion

Designed specifically for Canon’s APS-C mirrorless cameras (like the EOS R50, R10, and R7), the Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM is the ultimate lightweight telephoto companion. If you started your photography journey with a standard 18-45mm kit lens and find yourself frustrated that you can't zoom in close enough to capture your kids playing soccer or a bird in a distant tree, this lens is the perfect, budget-friendly solution.

Because it utilizes the 1.6x crop factor of Canon's APS-C sensors, this tiny lens provides a massive full-frame equivalent reach of 88-336mm. It delivers the magnification you need to pull distant subjects right into your lap, all in a highly portable package that weighs a mere 9.5 ounces and takes up very little space in an everyday camera bag.

Why You'll Love This Lens

  • Massive Telephoto Reach: The 55-210mm range is incredibly versatile. It allows you to shoot flattering, tightly cropped portraits at the 55mm end, and then instantly zoom all the way out to 210mm to capture distant field sports, skittish wildlife, or school stage performances.

  • Featherlight Portability: Historically, adding a 300mm-equivalent lens to your bag meant adding a massive, heavy piece of glass. Weighing only 9.5 oz (270g) and measuring under 4 inches long when retracted, this lens completely eliminates neck and shoulder fatigue, making it an absolute joy to travel and hike with.

  • Crucial Image Stabilization (IS): Long telephoto lenses amplify the natural shake of your hands, making optical stabilization absolutely vital for sharp photos. This lens features up to 4.5 stops of built-in shake correction. When paired with an IBIS-equipped camera body (like the EOS R7), it achieves up to a highly impressive 7 stops of coordinated control.

  • Smooth and Quiet STM Autofocus: The leadscrew-type stepping motor (STM) provides fast and accurate autofocus for still photography, keeping up with running kids and pets effortlessly. It also remains near-silent and incredibly smooth for distraction-free video recording.

  • Surprising Detail Capabilities: At the 210mm telephoto end, this lens achieves a maximum magnification of 0.28x. This allows you to stand back and capture gorgeous, frame-filling detail shots of flowers or textures with a nicely blurred background.

Things to Note

To achieve its incredibly small size and low price point, the RF-S 55-210mm features a variable, relatively dark maximum aperture (f/5 to f/7.1). Because the lens drops to f/7.1 at the 210mm end, it lets in a relatively small amount of light. This makes it primarily a "good weather" lens. If you are shooting indoors (like a high school gymnasium) or at dusk, you will need to rely heavily on your camera's high-ISO capabilities to keep your shutter speeds fast enough to avoid motion blur.

Secondly, to keep the weight down to a mere 9.5 ounces, the lens utilizes a plastic lens mount rather than metal. While perfectly durable for everyday consumer use, it may not withstand the heavy abuse or rapid, frequent lens swapping of a daily professional workflow.

Because this is an RF-S lens, it is designed specifically for crop-sensor APS-C cameras. While it will physically mount to a full-frame camera (like the EOS R8 or R6 Mark II), it will force the camera into a low-resolution crop mode.

Finally, like almost all non-L Canon lenses, the lens hood is sold separately. If you want the ET-60B lens hood to prevent sun glare and protect the front glass element from bumps and scratches, you will need to purchase it as an additional accessory.
