The absolute most critical factor before purchasing the Speedlite EL-5 is its exclusive camera compatibility. Because it draws power and data entirely through the new digital shoe, it requires a modern Canon camera equipped with the 21-pin Multi-Function Shoe (such as the EOS R1, R3, R5 Mark II, R6 Mark II, R8, R7, or R50). It will not fit or fire on older cameras with standard 5-pin hot shoes (like the original EOS R5, R6, R, RP, or any DSLR), and there is no adapter that can make a Multi-Function flash work on a legacy camera body.

Secondly, while a genuine Canon LP-EL lithium-ion battery is included in the box, Canon does not include the LC-E6 battery charger. The LP-EL battery charges using the exact same standard LC-E6 wall charger that powers most mid-to-high-end Canon cameras (like the EOS R5 or R6). If you do not already own an LC-E6 charger from a previous camera purchase, you will absolutely need to buy one separately to charge this flash.

Finally, please remember that this flash operates using Canon's 2.4 GHz Radio Transmission (RT) system only. It does not feature optical wireless transmission and will not optically trigger older, non-RT flashes (like the 580EX II or 430EX II) unless you attach a separate radio receiver to those legacy flashes.
