Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 Lens

The Ultimate Everyday Prime

Designed to be the lens you simply never take off your camera, the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is a masterclass in compact, lightweight design. Falling perfectly between a slightly wide 35mm and a standard 50mm, the 40mm focal length is incredibly versatile, mimicking the natural field of view of the human eye.

Whether you are shooting street photography, casual portraits, or everyday lifestyle moments, this unassuming little "muffin" lens delivers excellent sharpness and beautifully soft background blur (bokeh) thanks to its fast f/2 aperture. Best of all, it weighs practically nothing, making your full-frame or DX-format Nikon Z camera incredibly easy to carry all day long.

Why You'll Love This Lens

  • The "Goldilocks" Focal Length: 40mm is uniquely versatile. It’s wide enough to capture environmental context in street scenes or tight indoor spaces, yet long enough to shoot flattering portraits without the facial distortion common in wider lenses. On a crop-sensor (DX) camera like the Z50 or Z fc, it acts as a perfect 60mm equivalent portrait lens.

  • Featherweight Design: Weighing a mere 6 ounces (170g) and measuring less than 2 inches long, it completely transforms the footprint of your camera. Paired with a body like the Nikon Z5 or Z f, it creates a stealthy, highly portable setup that you won't hesitate to throw in a small bag.

  • Fast f/2 Aperture: The bright f/2 maximum aperture allows you to easily shoot indoors or at dusk without cranking your ISO to noisy levels. It also creates excellent subject separation, melting busy backgrounds into smooth, creamy blur.

  • Quiet, Fast Autofocus: Driven by a stepping motor (STM), the autofocus is snappy for stills and virtually silent for video. This makes it an excellent choice for vloggers or run-and-gun filmmakers who rely on in-camera audio.

  • Customizable Control Ring: Like most Z-mount lenses, the manual focus ring can be customized in the camera's menu to control aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation, giving you a tactile, clickless way to adjust settings on the fly.

  • Incredible Value: This lens offers a fantastic entry point into the Nikon Z prime ecosystem. It delivers image quality that punches far above its highly accessible price tag.

Things to Note

To achieve this incredibly lightweight design and affordable price point, Nikon used a plastic lens mount rather than the metal mount found on their more expensive S-Line lenses. While modern high-density plastics are incredibly durable and perfectly fine for a lens this light, it won't feel quite as premium when mounting it to your camera.

Additionally, while it has a rubber gasket at the mount to help keep out dust, it is not fully weather-sealed throughout the barrel. You will want to be cautious when shooting in heavy rain or extremely dusty environments. Finally, note that it does not come with a lens hood in the box—if you want one to prevent lens flare on sunny days, you will need to purchase the HN-40 hood (or a third-party equivalent) separately.  We are happy to find one for you!
