The most frequent point of confusion surrounding the EN-EL15 family is in-camera USB charging. While this battery supports being charged inside the camera, your camera body must also support this feature. If you put this EN-EL15c battery into an older DSLR (like a D850 or D750), it will power the camera perfectly, but you still cannot charge the battery by plugging a USB cable into the camera.

Secondly, please be aware that Nikon does not include a wall charger when you purchase this battery on its own. It charges flawlessly using the standard Nikon MH-25 or MH-25a wall charger that was likely included in the box when you originally bought your camera. If you do not own one, you will need to purchase it separately.

Finally, while the battery is fully backwards compatible with older DSLRs, the reverse is not always true for the newest cameras. If you purchase a cutting-edge camera like the Nikon Z8, Nikon explicitly requires the use of the newer EN-EL15c (or EN-EL15b) to unlock the camera's highest performance modes; older, gray-colored EN-EL15 batteries will either severely throttle the camera's performance or be rejected entirely.
