Description

Nikon ProStaff 5 16-48x60 Spotting Scope (Angled Viewing)

The Lightweight, All-Weather Champion for Long-Range Observation

For birders, hunters, and target shooters who need to spot precise details at extreme distances without hauling around a massive, heavy telescope, the Nikon ProStaff 5 16-48x60 Spotting Scope is the ideal solution. Designed to offer a perfect balance of optical performance and field portability, this fieldscope packs a powerful 16-48x zoom range into a compact body that weighs less than 2 pounds.

By utilizing an angled eyepiece design, this scope provides a far more comfortable viewing experience when you need to observe subjects situated higher up (like birds in the canopy or astronomy targets near the zenith) or when you are sharing the scope with people of different heights. Featuring fully multi-coated optics, an integrated sliding sunshade, and a rugged, fully waterproof housing, the ProStaff 5 ensures your view remains bright, crisp, and color-accurate regardless of the weather conditions.

Why You'll Love This Spotting Scope

  • Versatile 16-48x Zoom Eyepiece: This generous zoom range is incredibly practical for field observation. It allows you to use the 16x setting for a wider field of view to locate your subject, and then smoothly zoom all the way in to 48x to magnify finer details.

  • Comfortable Angled Viewing: The angled eyepiece design is a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts. It drastically reduces neck strain during long observation sessions, especially when looking uphill or into the sky. It also allows the tripod to be set lower to the ground for better stability in windy conditions.

  • 60mm Objective Lens: The 60mm front lens strikes the perfect "sweet spot." It gathers enough light to provide bright, high-contrast images during the crucial low-light periods of dawn and dusk, but keeps the overall footprint of the scope significantly smaller and lighter than massive 82mm models.

  • Fully Waterproof (WP) & Fogproof: Built to survive demanding outdoor conditions, the housing is O-ring sealed and nitrogen-purged. It is completely immune to internal fogging during rapid temperature changes and is fully waterproof (submersible up to 3.3 feet / 1m for 10 minutes).

  • Fully Multi-Coated Optics: Every lens and prism within the optical path is fully multi-layer coated. This maximizes light transmission and minimizes chromatic aberration (color fringing) at the edges of the view field, ensuring your target is rendered with exceptional clarity and true color fidelity.

  • Built-In Sliding Sunshade: The objective lens features an integrated, retractable hood. This can be instantly pulled forward to block excessive glare from the sun, or to protect the front glass element from raindrops and snow.

Things to Note

The most important physical limitation to understand with a 60mm spotting scope is exit pupil size at high magnification. When zoomed all the way in to 48x, the exit pupil shrinks to a very small 1.25mm. This means that while the image will be highly magnified, it will be noticeably darker. To comfortably use the maximum 48x magnification, you will need bright, daytime lighting conditions.

Secondly, individuals who wear thick eyeglasses should be aware of the 16.5mm eye relief. While generally adequate for most users to see the full field of view, some eyeglass wearers may find it slightly tight and need to press their lenses closer to the eyepiece.

Finally, while the scope includes a standard 1/4"-20 threaded mount on the bottom, a tripod is absolutely mandatory for use. Handholding any optic at 16x to 48x magnification is impossible; you must mount this scope to a sturdy tripod or window mount to achieve a usable, shake-free view.
