Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR Lens
The Featherlight, Long-Reaching Telephoto Companion
When you want to capture distant wildlife, field sports, or tightly compressed travel portraits without hauling around a massive, heavy piece of glass, the Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR is the perfect solution. Engineered specifically for Nikon's compact DX-format (APS-C) mirrorless cameras like the Z50, Z30, and Zfc, this surprisingly sleek telephoto zoom acts as the ideal, long-reaching counterpart to your everyday 16-50mm kit lens.
Because of the 1.5x crop factor of Nikon's DX sensors, this lens provides an impressive full-frame equivalent focal range of 75-375mm. It allows you to pull the most elusive, distant subjects right into your lap with excellent clarity and contrast. By combining this massive telephoto reach with remarkably fast, quiet autofocus and 5 stops of built-in optical stabilization, it completely rewrites the rules for what a budget-friendly wildlife and sports lens can achieve.
Why You'll Love This Lens
-
Massive Telephoto Reach: The 50-250mm focal range (equivalent to 75-375mm) is incredibly versatile. It provides a highly flattering, undistorted perspective for portraits at the 50mm end, and then seamlessly zooms in to capture birds in flight or stage performances at the 250mm extreme telephoto end.
-
Incredibly Compact and Lightweight: Historically, a lens with a 375mm equivalent reach would weigh down your entire camera bag. This lens weighs a mere 14.3 ounces (405g) and features a retracting barrel design, keeping it remarkably short and easy to pack when not in use.
-
Powerful Image Stabilization (VR): Shooting handheld at extreme telephoto distances heavily amplifies the natural shake of your hands. This lens combats that with up to 5 stops of built-in Vibration Reduction (VR). This shake correction is absolutely vital for ensuring your handheld photos are tack-sharp and your telephoto video remains incredibly smooth.
-
Smooth and Quiet Autofocus: Driven by a fast stepping motor (STM), the autofocus is highly accurate and completely whisper-quiet. This is critical for capturing skittish wildlife without disturbing them, and prevents your camera's internal microphone from picking up distracting mechanical clicking noises during video recording.
-
Impressive Close-Focusing: While not a dedicated macro lens, it boasts a surprisingly short minimum focusing distance of just 1.64 feet (0.5m) at the 50mm mark. This allows you to stand remarkably close to your subjects to capture beautiful, tightly framed details.
-
Customizable Control Ring: The lens features a smooth, click-less control ring on the barrel. You can easily program this ring through your camera's menu to silently adjust your aperture, ISO, exposure compensation, or manual focus on the fly.

Things to Note
To achieve its long reach while remaining so light and affordable, the lens utilizes a variable, relatively dark maximum aperture (f/4.5 to f/6.3). Because the lens drops to f/6.3 at the 250mm telephoto end, it lets in a relatively small amount of light. This makes it primarily a "good weather" lens. If you are shooting indoors without a flash or capturing wildlife at dusk, you will need to push your camera's ISO significantly higher to keep your shutter speeds fast enough to freeze action.
Secondly, you must be aware of the DX crop-sensor designation. This lens is engineered specifically for APS-C sensor cameras (like the Z50, Zfc, and Z30). While it will physically mount perfectly onto a full-frame Nikon Z camera (like the Z6 or Z8), it will automatically force the camera into a "DX crop mode," drastically reducing your final image resolution.
Third, to keep the weight down to 405g, the lens features a plastic lens mount rather than metal, and it lacks robust environmental weather sealing. You will need to exercise caution when shooting in heavy rain, dust, or blowing sand.
Finally, remember the retractable barrel mechanism. You cannot shoot while the lens is collapsed for storage. Before taking a photo, you must physically rotate the zoom ring to extend the front barrel to the 50mm working position.
