Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM Lens

The Ultimate Portrait Prime for Unmatched Subject Isolation

For portrait, wedding, and indoor sports photographers who demand absolute optical perfection and breathtaking background blur, the Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM is a true masterpiece. Recognized as one of the sharpest lenses ever produced for the Sony E-mount system, it takes the legendary, highly flattering 135mm focal length and supercharges it with advanced G Master optical engineering and blistering autofocus speed.

By combining an ultra-fast f/1.8 aperture with extreme telephoto compression, this lens allows you to effortlessly obliterate distracting backgrounds, making your subjects look as though they are stepping right out of a high-end editorial magazine. Whether you are shooting a dimly lit wedding ceremony from the back of a church or capturing tight, dynamic action at an indoor basketball game, this lens delivers a distinctive, intensely dramatic "look" that cannot be replicated by standard zooms or shorter prime lenses.

Why You'll Love This Lens

  • Breathtaking Subject Isolation: The combination of a 135mm telephoto reach and an ultra-bright f/1.8 maximum aperture gives you unparalleled control over depth of field. It melts even the most cluttered, distracting environments into a smooth, creamy wash of color (bokeh) to completely isolate your subject.

  • Flawless G Master Sharpness: Packed with extreme aspherical (XA), Super ED, and ED glass elements, this lens virtually eliminates chromatic aberration and color fringing. It is staggeringly sharp from corner to corner, even when shot wide open at f/1.8, meticulously resolving the fine details of eyelashes and fabric textures.

  • Blazing Dual XD Autofocus: Driving the massive glass elements of an f/1.8 telephoto lens is a monumental task, but Sony engineered this lens with highly advanced front and rear XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motors. The autofocus is whisper-quiet, terrifyingly fast, and tenaciously tracks erratic subjects, making it an unexpected favorite for indoor sports and action photography.

  • Dedicated Manual Iris Ring: A massive benefit for hybrid shooters and videographers, this lens features a tactile physical aperture (iris) ring directly on the barrel. It includes a physical de-click switch that allows filmmakers to pull exposure smoothly and silently while rolling video.

  • Customizable Controls: The lens barrel features two programmable Focus Hold Buttons placed at different angles for easy access in both horizontal and vertical shooting orientations. You can map these through the camera menu to control Eye-AF or other vital functions without shifting your grip.

  • Surprisingly Close Focusing: Despite its long reach, a floating focus mechanism allows the lens to focus as closely as 2.3 feet (0.7m), yielding a maximum magnification of 0.25x. This allows you to capture stunning, highly detailed close-ups of wedding rings, jewelry, or facial features.

Things to Note

The most important caveat to shooting with a 135mm prime is the working distance required. To fit a full-body or half-body portrait into the frame, you must physically stand quite far away from your subject. Because of this, it is not an ideal lens for small indoor studios, cramped getting-ready rooms, or tight event spaces (where an 85mm or 50mm would be far more practical).

Secondly, it is an incredibly robust, professional piece of glass. Weighing in at roughly 2.1 pounds (950g) and utilizing large 82mm front filters, it is a relatively large and heavy lens. While it balances beautifully on professional bodies (especially with a battery grip attached), it can become fatiguing to carry on a neck strap during a 10-hour wedding day.

Finally, unlike some of Sony's long telephoto zooms, this 135mm prime does not feature built-in Optical SteadyShot (OSS). To achieve stable handheld video or shoot photos at remarkably slow shutter speeds without a tripod, you will need to rely heavily on a camera body equipped with In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS).
