Description

Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G Lens

The Ultra-Lightweight Power Zoom Revolution for Hybrid Creators

For solo filmmakers, travel vloggers, and hybrid content creators, the transition between photography and high-end video production has never been more demanding. The Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G was engineered from the ground up to be the ultimate wide-angle tool for this exact workflow. By completely rethinking traditional lens design, Sony has delivered the world’s lightest full-frame wide-angle power zoom with a constant f/4 aperture, completely revolutionizing how creators capture sweeping landscapes and cramped architectural interiors.

The defining triumph of this lens is its entirely internal zoom and focus design. Because the physical length of the lens never changes and the front element never extends, the center of gravity remains flawlessly static from 16mm to 35mm. This means you can balance your camera on a motorized video gimbal or a lightweight drone just once, and seamlessly zoom in and out all day long without ever having to pause and re-calibrate your motors.

Why You'll Love This Lens

  • Cinematic Power Zoom (PZ): Driven by four independent XD Linear Motors dedicated exclusively to the zoom mechanism, this lens allows for incredibly smooth, cinematic zoom pulls. You can control the zoom speed precisely via a physical rocker switch on the lens barrel, the zoom ring, or even remotely through compatible Sony camera bodies and smartphone apps.

  • A Lightweight Miracle: Weighing an astonishing 12.5 ounces (353g) and measuring roughly 3.5 inches long, it is dramatically smaller and lighter than almost every other full-frame wide-angle zoom on the market. It perfectly balances on compact mirrorless bodies, making it a joy to handhold during long vlogging sessions.

  • True Internal Zoom & Focus: Because nothing extends outward, the lens is highly resistant to dust and moisture, and your gimbal/drone balance remains permanently locked in, regardless of your focal length.

  • Dedicated Manual Iris Ring: A massive benefit for videographers, this lens features a tactile physical aperture (iris) ring directly on the barrel. It includes a physical de-click switch that allows filmmakers to pull exposure smoothly and silently while rolling video.

  • Blistering Dual XD Autofocus: Separate from the zoom motors, two additional XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motors drive the autofocus group. The AF is highly accurate, completely whisper-quiet, and tenaciously tracks erratic subjects, making it perfect for high-speed continuous shooting or distraction-free audio recording.

  • Constant f/4 Aperture: Your exposure will not unexpectedly darken as you zoom from 16mm to 35mm. This is absolutely crucial for maintaining consistent exposure during video recording and manual photography.

Things to Note

To achieve its miraculously compact size, featherlight weight, and advanced internal zooming mechanics, the lens relies on a constant f/4 maximum aperture. While f/4 is perfectly adequate for daytime video, vlogging, and well-lit real estate interiors, it is not the absolute best choice for starry-night astrophotography or extremely dark event venues unless you are willing to push your camera's ISO higher.

Secondly, optical purists should be aware that this lens relies heavily on digital lens corrections. If you view the uncorrected RAW photo files in editing software that doesn't automatically apply a lens profile, you will notice significant barrel distortion and heavy vignetting (dark corners) at the 16mm wide end. Your camera and modern editing software correct this instantly and automatically, but it is a physical compromise made to keep the lens so small.

Finally, to save weight and space, this lens does not feature built-in Optical SteadyShot (OSS). For handheld photography at slow shutter speeds or walking video footage, you will need to rely on your camera body's In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) or Active Mode stabilization.
