Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Lens (Sony E)
The Reigning Champion of Compact Standard Zooms, Perfected
When Tamron released their original 28-75mm f/2.8 for Sony E-mount, it completely revolutionized the mirrorless market by proving that a professional, fast-aperture standard zoom didn't have to be massive, heavy, or prohibitively expensive. With the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2, they have taken that legendary formula and entirely redesigned it from the ground up, delivering a second-generation masterpiece that is sharper, faster, and more customizable than ever before.
By integrating their top-tier VXD autofocus motor and completely revamping the optical formula to support the massive resolutions of modern high-megapixel sensors, the G2 version actively rivals the performance of lenses that cost more than twice as much. Whether you are an all-day wedding photographer, a travel vlogger, or a portrait enthusiast, this lens delivers breathtaking edge-to-edge clarity and creamy background blur in a package that weighs just 19 ounces (540g).
Why You'll Love This Lens
-
Blazing-Fast VXD Autofocus: The biggest upgrade from the first generation is the inclusion of Tamron's premium VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor. The autofocus is up to twice as fast as the original model, completely whisper-quiet for video recording, and flawlessly tracks erratic subjects and eyes with terrifying precision.
-
The "Goldilocks" Portability: Weighing a mere 19 oz (540g) and measuring just 4.6 inches long, it completely eliminates the heavy, front-weighted fatigue traditionally associated with professional f/2.8 standard zooms. It balances perfectly on compact Sony mirrorless bodies and lightweight motorized video gimbals.
-
Constant f/2.8 Aperture: The bright f/2.8 maximum aperture remains perfectly constant across the entire zoom range. This allows you to shoot clean, low-noise images in dark indoor environments, keep your shutter speeds high to freeze action, and easily melt distracting backgrounds away into a gorgeous, smooth blur.
-
Tamron Lens Utility Port: Tamron built a waterproof USB-C port directly into the side of the lens barrel. By plugging the lens into your computer or Android smartphone, you can instantly update firmware or completely customize the focus ring behavior and focus-set button without needing to buy a separate docking station.
-
Incredible Close-Focusing: The G2 boasts a surprisingly short minimum focusing distance of just 7.1 inches (0.18m) at the 28mm wide end. This yields a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.7, allowing you to capture stunning, wide-angle "macro-style" detail shots with an exaggerated, dramatic perspective.
-
Standardized 67mm Filters: Like almost all of Tamron's modern mirrorless lenses, the 28-75mm G2 utilizes a standard 67mm front filter thread. You can seamlessly share a single set of expensive circular polarizers or variable ND filters across your entire Tamron kit.

Things to Note
The most important consideration with this lens is the 28mm starting focal length. To achieve its incredibly compact size, light weight, and accessible price point, Tamron sacrificed the extreme 24mm wide angle found on standard 24-70mm professional zooms. If you frequently shoot cramped real estate interiors or sweeping landscapes, that 4mm difference is noticeable. For general event and portrait work, however, 28mm is perfectly wide enough.
Secondly, to keep the overall footprint as small as possible, this lens does not feature built-in Optical Image Stabilization (VC). For handheld photography at slow shutter speeds or walking video footage, you will need to rely heavily on your camera body's In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) or Active Mode digital stabilization.
Finally, while the lens is remarkably compact for storage, it does utilize an extending zoom barrel. The front element physically extends outward as you zoom toward the 75mm telephoto end. If you are balancing the camera on a motorized video gimbal, you will need to be mindful of this shifting center of gravity.
